EEG is a non-invasive bedside test frequently performed on patients of all ages and is used in diagnosis of various brain disorders especially epilepsy. It measures the electrical activity that our brain produces while sending and receiving messages to and from our bodies.
We offer this service for not only adult but also for kids. We provide this service in a well-equipped outpatient neurology setting at the Greenslopes Private Hospital. We provide this service for the inpatients as well (including ICU). We have minimal waiting periods, and the reports are provided by highly skilled epileptologists (neurologists with subspecialty qualification and experience in epilepsy).
Patients may be required to have a routine or a sleep deprived EEG based on their clinical need determined by the referring physician.
A sleep deprived EEG involves staying awake all the night (or essentially for several hours) before the test, preferably without the help of beverages containing caffeine. It is hoped that by staying awake, a patient goes to sleep during the test. This increases the yield of capturing any abnormal waveforms signifying underlying seizure predisposition. When sleep deprived, some types of seizures are more likely to occur.

We also offer ambulatory (prolonged) EEG (>48 hours, mostly up to 72 hours) that your neurologist/doctor may request. In this case, we set up the recording equipment and the patients can stay at home. They can do most of their normal daily activities including driving (if appropriate). There is no gap for this service.
The test will be carried out by an experienced scientist who will explain every step of the procedure as they progress. The test itself can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. There may be some manoeuvres during the test e.g. observing flashing lights or taking deep breaths.
This test can be requested using the referral form.
